My Awakening

On a Saturday evening in 1988, my twin sons and I returned home after visiting Hudson, Wisconsin where we had enjoyed a Snoopy play with my sisters and their kids. We were tired but exhilarated. It was a good play and a fun time. My husband had been drinking and was in bed. He had not wanted to go with us yet was upset that we had gone without him. Before going to sleep, I touched his shoulder in an attempt to keep peace in our fragile, fourteen-year relationship and was rejected. Emotionally crushed, I withdrew into the fetal position in an effort to not cry.
In the depths of despair I heard a voice. “Relax,” it said. I straightened my body, and was immediately catapulted into the most splendid, fantastic, uplifting, ecstatic journey through the clouds. I had no body. I was bright and sparkly, and light as a feather. As I passed the clouds, my spirit traveling at breakneck speed, thousands of stars shipped by. Clouds parted as I flew ever upward, climbing to an unfamiliar realm of peace, calm, and serenity. I was aware only of whiteness and warmth. I was enveloped in unconditional love. Then I heard the words, “You don’t need that anymore.”
The words shocked me back into my Earth-body reality and I drifted into a deep, profound sleep.
A few weeks later I shared this story with one of my sisters, thinking this had certainly never happened to anyone before. I was expecting her to say I was off my rocker! Instead she simply smiled and said, “Oh, you had a Spiritual Experience.”
This event — a crushing rejection immediately followed by an ecstatic, loving experience awakened my deepest knowing — that we are so very much more than this human body. It was the beginning of what I call my conscious spiritual journey, and life has never been the same.

Over the years I have heard of many other awakenings where people may have had a near death experience, near fatal car accident or sometimes gentler reminders that we are more than we have been taught, and that we are all spiritual beings who chose a human body — events that got them on their conscious spiritual journey and assisted in their evolution to becoming a fully aware being.

What is your story of awakening? How did it change your life and the life of those around you?
I don’t believe we make mistakes or that there are “accidents.” I believe we have different outcomes based on the choices we make, and that life is a series of synchronistic events. Everything happens for a reason. For instance, if you are reading this blog/letter, it was certainly meant to be, and if you have any comments or questions, please email me! I would love to hear your story.
Be In Love, Madonna
